Can I use the iPad2 in either horizontal or vertical orientation with this dock? Is it stable in the vertical position?

No, you cannot use the ipad in landscape because the way that the ipad stays in the dock is the 30 pin dock connector and there is only one on the bottom.

No. The iPad 2 has no dock connector on it's sides meaning this dock is incapable of doing such a thing. It's intended for the vertical position and counterweights the iPad for stability.
