Can a Thunderbolt display connect to a 5 year old MacPro running Lion? Or do I have to have something updated on the MacPro?

Does it work the other way around? Use it to connect Thunderbolt Drives to MacPro with eSATA add-on cards? If it does, I will purchase it now!
