Assuming its a newish mac you need a third party mini display port to HDMI these can found easily via google, bear in mind older macs with mini display ports will not always support sound.
If your mac is older you may need a DVI or mini DVI to HDMI.- Answered by James S from Leicester

You need to buy a DVI to HDMI converter and use an HDMI cable or buy a DVI to HDMI cable. Griffin sells a video display converter, a Display Port to HDMI and a DVI to HDMI converter that attaches to the end of an DVI cable. One of the better options is a DVI to HDMI cable, no converters, just a straight cable. This option does require an additional cable to hook up for audio since DVI does not transmit audio.
