Can I stream my Ipod to my TV with the Apple TV device? Also, does if have to be with an HDMI cable? I have an old TV set and have not upgraded.

Apple TV works ONLY with HDMI. If your TV doesn't support HDMI, then Apple TV isn't going to work with it.
An iTunes library on a Mac can be streamed to a remote audio device that is connected either to Apple TV or through Airport Express. You can use Apple's free "Remote" app on an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad as a remote control for the iTunes library in that scenario.
You can connect an iPod (or similar device) to any TV or stereo or other device that supports audio input from an external device. You'll need a cable with a standard 1/8" (3.5mm) headphone TRS jack (aka "stereo mini-jack") for the iPod end. The TV end will depend on the TV, but will likely be either the same 1/8" headphone jack, or dual RCA phono plugs.- Answered by Kenneth D from Ottawa
