I need to update from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Will the update force any of my applications to uninstall?

I have many applications such as games, utilities, etc. I'm paranoid that updating will remove these applications, as it would be a pain to re-install them all. I'm not worried about compatibility, just that the act of updating would force something to uninstall for whatever reason.

Can this even happen or do I have nothing to worry about?

    No applications should be uninstalled after upgrading. Snow Leopard should upgrade just the OS. You may also see an improvement in the applications when running them.

  • There's no reason why upgrading would uninstall any of your applications or games. In my experience upgrading from 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard has been very smooth, with the only hitches being compatibility issues such as the loss of AppleTalk.

    Regardless, the usual advice to make a full system backup before upgrading still applies. Since you have Leopard, it's extremely easy to make a full system backup to an external hard drive using Time Machine. Then if anything goes wrong you'll be able to get back to where you were before the upgrade.

  • Dillon - I suggest you check your current programs versions numbers and look at each of the websites to see if this version of the program you have is supported under 10.6. If the indication is positive then you have no problems with older programs. If these programs are written for PPC then you will need Rosetta to be installed from the OSX DVD so as to run these programs. Rosetta comes with OSX 10.6.
    I suggest that you make a list of your applications that concern you and see if they have any issues w OSX 10.6 or in fact have newer release or updates that cover this situation.

    Then I also suggest you make a backup of everything - and if you have space a new partition to move everything over to that way you can boot from this second partition and run under the older OSX you have.

  • You may not be able to upgrade to 10.6 if you have a
    Powerbook or Powermac. If you are able to upgrade
    which means you have an Intel Mac with 1GB RAM
    and free space on the Hard Drive, you should be able
    to install the Snow Leopard CD properly. The 10.6
    installer does not overwrite 3rd party apps. But you
    will want to check on the 3rd party apps websites to
    see if those apps will run properly on Snow Leopard.
