I have a MacBook with OS X 10.5.8 with a 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor --- does Snow Leopard require a 2.53 GHz processor or better?

No you will be able to run the snow leopard operating system on the macbook you have fine. All you will need to run it is a mac with a intel processor, 1GB of ram and about 5GB of hardrive space.
