Can I download 10.6.8 rather than have to buy it as a CD and wait for it?

You have to buy it as a DVD. The first downloadable version of OS X is 10.7 Lion.

Snow Leopard only comes on disk. But it may not be 10.6.8. It could be 10.6.3. After installing, go to Apple menu and do Software Update to bring it up to 10.6.8.

No, there is no legally available download for Snow Leopard. Also, beware of people offering Snow Leopard on a USB stick, these are bootlegs.
