What exactly is video mirroring?

My main reason for getting this is for school presentations(like keynote) I hear there Is video mirroring. I don't exactly know what it is and I would also like to use this at home and was wondering if video monitoring allowed me to play more apps than iPad (the first)

    Video mirroring enables you to display the same image on both screens simultaneously.
