Can the ipad VGA cable be used on the ipod classic

No.
I tried with an iPod Classic 160GB (the last but one generation: 2x80GB) and the VGA adapter for the iPad.
Too bad, there is so much space, I could have used the iPod as Backup + portable Media Player to display pictures and own videos to the family.
