Unfortunately, the Apple Batteries can only be purchased with an Apple Battery Charger. However, you can charge other brand batteries with the charger if you wish.

I purchased Sanyo eneloop batteries as extras which are said to have the same specs. They have been flawless along side my Apple batteries.

According to the overview page apple states that the supplied batteries have a life span of up to 10 years. If within those 10 years you need more batteries it probably means that you require them for more devices in which case it would make sense to purchase another charger enabling you to charge 4 batteries at once, with a total of 12 batteries.
Can not confirm if apple will sell individual batteries.- Answered by Benjamin H from Adelaide

As the description report: "it works with AA NiMH batteries from other companies, too" You can purchase battery from third parties at any time, as k=long as they are AA size and NiMH.

If you don't mind using non-Apple batteries, you can buy any NiMH AA-size batteries and charge them. The blurb says "It's optimized for Apple-supplied batteries, but it works with AA NiMH batteries from other companies, too.".
