I have a macbook pro 17' purchased 3 years ago. I have just discovered that I was sold it with a 60watt magsafe adapter will this damage laptop.

No. If you run some demanding software, it might not charge the laptop while you're using it heavily, but otherwise, it works fine with 60W adapters.
