Under the Trackpad panel in System Preferences there are Drop down menus to program which features should be activated by specific gestures. Personally, I have dashboard set to open when I swipe four fingers to the left. If you find System Preferences options to be too limiting or you prefer not to sacrifice a useful gesture, I recommend lookig into an extension by the name of BetterTouchTool. It adds a preference pane to System Preferences which allows for the the user to program gestures far beyond the scope of what Apple offers by default. For example, five fingers turned in a circular motion similar to the motion used to open a jar, might serve to open Dashboard. It's all up to you.
