I own both the 1st generation and 2nd generation apple remote. During the last 24 hours of use the 2nd generation remote does everything the 1st generation one does. The difference appear cosmetic: Unibody aluminum casing to compliment the MBP, removal of labels (replaced with dots) for volume up/down fast forward and reverse, change in the placement of the play/pause button from the center to the of the menu button. Since it came with very little documentation, I still trying to figure out if there are any expansion in capabilities with the new remote. To date there are none which is rather discouraging, Needless to say, I generally don't upgrade for cosmetics but rather for additional or enhanced functionality.
