What is the maximum distance that will work with the remote?
Also, must it be in the line of sight?

As long as you can see your Mac or the iPod Universal Dock it will work. Most likely if you can't see it, it won't work. Most likely the maximum distance you can be away from it is around 30 feet I believe.
