Does the iPad dock need to be plugged into power if you are using it simply to run speakers through
I Wish to run my iPad and use speakers where electricity is not available, is the iPad dock my best solution

No power to the dock is required for your iPad to play through speakers attached to the dock (you are running on the iPad battery). Unless you have some other reason to buy the dock, I would just plug the speakers directly into the iPad headphone jack and save the cost of the dock.
