Do I need a new video card?

I'm running a dual quad (Xeon processor) Mac Pro with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT currently using 2 x 23" cinema displays and would like to upgrade to the new 27" screens which I've had for a while.... do I need a new video card for the new screens or is there an adapter that I can pick up so I can use the existing card?

  • There are a few dvi => mini display port adapters but they are insanely expensive. You might want to opt out for a better video card that has mini-display port built in.

    I'm afraid you will.

There was a good Q&A on the old 24" screen page, but that's been taken down. There's cables to take DisplayPort source to DVI screens, but not the other way around. Something to do with the signal coding I believe.

In better news, BareFeats shows that the Radeon 5870 will work in your machine - good performance upgrade too! (see the Q&A under the 5870 card)
