Dual-Link does not mean 2 DVI outputs. Its just a very misleading term used to indicate that it will carry a higher quality signal than the standard DVI adapter. If the macbook pro had more than one mini-display port, you could run multiple displays using multiple adapters, but it only has one so you will have to stick with the laptop's screen as the second screen with the monitor.
There might be a third-party product that splits the video signal in a DVI cable, but it would only work if you wanted to clone your desktop (mirror), not extend it.- Answered by Ben S from Golden
