Need to connect MacBook Pro with mini display port to projector for showing powerpoint presentations. Will the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter work?

Depends, on what inputs you have on your projector. If your projector has HDMI then you will need to buy Mini Displayport to DVI adapter and a DVI adapter to HDMI cable.
If your projector has DVI-D input then this will itself work like a charm- Answered by Dhruv M from Plymouth Meeting
