Assuming your internal Ethernet plug on the iMac doesn't work then this is a good alternative, but it only works if you upgrade to Leopard or Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard can be purchased for $39.
Along with this adapter you'll need a standard Ethernet cable, this just mirrors the functionality of your internal Ethernet port.- Answered by BC from Greenpoint

I have read on other reports that you need 10.5.2 or later to use this adapter. I can't say for sure whether it would work on 10.4, but it sounds like it might be time to upgrade to Snow Leopard, since it is so cheap.

Doesn't your iMac have an ethernet port already? it seems superfluous to purchase this adapter.
If it doesn't have an ethernet port, I can't see any reason it wouldn't work. Unless for some reason the 2006 iMac has 1.1 USB instead of 2.0. That doesn't seem like a possible scenario with an Intel machine.- Answered by SD from Lake Oswego
