do i have to press anything after I connect the cable to get it so show on screen?

Generally not. Look under the Apple in the upper left of your screen, then go to System Preferences > Display > Arrangement to decide how you're wish to use the monitor. If you don't first see your monitor come up upon plugging in the cable, press Detect Displays at the same System Preferences location previously described.
