Does charger protect from overcharging the iphone 4s/ipad 2 battery?

I have the original Apple chargers for the iPhone 4s and iPad2 and was wondering if there is feature on chargers (i.e. smart chip, etc.) that prevents battery from overcharging? If not, what is the recommended maximum charge time to prevent damage to battery life?

    The iPod / iPad / iPhones have inbuilt cutoff so they don't overcharge.
