When activating the sensor with non Nike+ shoes does the sensor have to be under the insole of the shoe?
Can the sensor be activated when it is located above the foot in the tongue of the shoe or must it be under the foot beneath the insole of the shoe?

Can, you can use the lace strap that is sometimes available in apple store and attach it on the tongue of your shoes, it doesn't matter right or left. The sensor uses accelerometer that does not depend on the placement inside the shoes, it only depends on the movement of the shoes (along with your foot). It measures the time when your foot is in contact with the ground and when it is off the ground, and uses physics calculation to measure the pace, distance and time. hope this can help.
