No, there are manufacturers that sell small velcro pouches to hold the sensor. I have one I use with my favorite pair of Asics. I just velcro the strap through the laces. I actually prefer this to using it in the insole because I don't have to disassemble the shoe after each run to turn off the sensor.

No, you can stick it in a little pouch and fix it to the laces on your favourite shoes. If you want to do this, it's best to fix it in two places so that it doesn't flick around too much- this make the accelerometer data dirty and less reliable.
