You will need the Mini Display Port to VGA Adapter. Apple switched from Mini-DVI to Mini-Display Port on MacBook / Pro / Air in Late-2008

If you have a 2011 MacBook Pro with a Mini DisplayPort, then you should use the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter.

No! The Mini display port and the thunderbolt port are completely different. To connect a MacBook Pro to a VGA monitor you may need to use a HDMI to VGA adapter.
