Firewire800 to ThunderBolt adapter - will it still work?

Further to the previous question regarding the use of a ThunderBolt adapter in order to connect the LaCie drive to an older Firewire 800 machine.....

Is it not true that the drive will work, not at Thundebolt speeds, but will still communicate with the drive at FIreWire speed?

Thanks

    Nope.

The Apple adapter will create a FireWire port when connected to the Thunderbolt port of a Mac.

Won't do anything to facilitate connecting a Thunderbolt drive to an older Mac that has only FireWire.

You can however connect the adapter at the end of a Thunderbolt daisy chain to permit connection of a FireWire drive. Just be sure that there is a Thunderbolt equipped Mac upstream.
