So this charges the iphone 5 as well as the original iPad?

It's clear from the way I read the product information here that it connects to the device by way of the new Lightening connector. That means only iPhone 5, 4th generation iPad and iPad mini.

Not the original iPad. Just iPad 4 and mini,as well as iPhone 5.
