    No. 'display port' is NOT older Thunderbolt.

    Thunderbolt is a new interface that happens to also support a display port monitor. You cannot use a Thunderbolt cable on an older Macbook. On that older Mac you can connect a display via the display port connection.

    The Thunderbolt connected drive will not work with the older display port connector of the Macbook Pro.

    You can however connect to the older Macbook Pro via the USB cable. Though the drive is USB 3.0, it is backward compatible to the USB 2.0 ports on the computer.
