can it be connected to an airport extreme?
Can the LaCie 1TB drive be connected to an airport extreme so that it backs up wirelessly? My assumption is that the speed would be USB2. If I do the original backup using Thunderbolt it may not be a problem having a slower backup on an ongoing basis.

Yes, you can connect via USB 2.0, but it will be considerably slower as you concluded. If many files change that are quite large, you will have slower backup operation.
