can I back up two MacBooks with this one external drive? Or would I need two? I'm trying to decide between this and the TimeCapsule.

You can use TimeMachine to backup 2 MacBooks. I would create two separate partitions though.

TIME CAPSULE....is your answer. I have been using it for 2 years plus.
~ The BEST results. Because you never worry about any virus corrupting your data with APPLE'S system.
~TIME Capsule is Fast in back ups. Some of the external drives are very slow.
