Is this compatible with the HDMI output of the MacBook Pro Retina?

No, its not - the HDMI port on the retina macbook pro does not provide power to the ATV Pro. ATV Pro requires 5V or less to operate bearing in mind that its a converter, the laptop does not send any power therefore not compatible.
