I was wondering if this can be used for Garage Band, and not just the plug-in suite it comes with.

The 2i2 can indeed be used with Garage Band or Logic. Once the drivers are installed,it can be selected as the sound input or output for anything running in OS X. I am running mine on my Mountain Lion Air.
