I am trying to find a configuration with an external hard drive for additional space and another for backup? Is this possible?
I have a MacBook Pro that is running out of space. I had a Time Capsule that never worked well and then died within 3 months. I don't want to go with this product again, so I was thinking a small portable hard drive (to store additional photos and videos) where I can work directly from that drive. And then a My Book that would back up the extra space drive and anything on my MacBook Pro. I can't seem to figure out whether this is possible. I'm looking for guidance on what to buy and how to set it up.

Hello Amanda,
What you're describing are 2 different things.
You want to make a backup of your computer using Time Machine and you want some extra space to hold your data files.
This is possible with an external USB drive like you've purchased, however you'll need 2 USB disks to meet your requirement.
One "File Sharing" USB disk for your digital goodies and one for Time Machine to backup the computer and the data on this file sharing disk.
This will accomplish the requirement you've listed. Your source data (file sharing usb disk), and your Computers OS disk, will be on a separate disk from the one holding your TM backups.
TM can backup everything for you on 1 disk as long as it's large enough.
I hope this helps.- Answered by Rick B from Lakeland
