H6395VC/A belkin 4 port aluminum usb2 hub.

I just purchased the H6395VC/A belkin 4 port aluminum usb2 hub. It comes with an electrical plug in, but the unit seems to function when only connected by the USB2 cable.

Is the paower connection actually not necessary? What is it's purpose

    The USB port you plug a device into will supply a limited amount of power. That said, some devices required more power than can be supplied from the hosts USB controller and thus need a "boost" from an external power supply.
