I'm not sure of the timing aspect (annually or otherwise), but I can confirm: When you plug in the iPhone/iPad connection, if calibration is necessary, the built-in software will auto-start the process. A message pops up telling you of the need to calibrate, that it will now start, will take a few minutes, and don't disconnect. Start to finish took roughly 2-3 minutes, if that long. In other words, no hassle to/for the user.
