Is this essentially just a pre-amp tailored for Mac and iPad/iPhone use?

I need to clarify my last answer. It is not just a pre-amp, as a pre-amp doesn't necessarily convert analogue to digital signal, which the Jam does. So it's a pre-amp and an AD converter too.
