Do the controls work with the iPhone 3G?

So far all the headsets I've tried with the iPhone 3G have had a problem where the play button works but the volume controls don't. Will these volume controls work with the iPhone 3G? I've tried 3 other headsets already and I'm starting to wonder if the iPhone 3G just doesn't work with volume controls?
