my macbook pro has a built-in subwoofer, so there's no need for an external one, right?

There is no sub-woofer that can compare to these fabulous 'speakers. Separate Bass volume control allows various combinations of flat playing or equalizer. Works with Airport ot Apple TV brilliantly.

That's right, you don't need one. However, if you want to improve the sound you get from your system, including bass (that's where the subwoofer comes in) you can achieve this by buying better external speakers such as the Harman Kardon's pictured. In this case, this will make a huge difference to the quality and volume achievable.
