Can I just use the right and left channels, or do I have to use the huge round base station type thing?

yes you have to use the sub woofer because it hooks all the speakers together
and then the sub hooks up to the computer and even if you can find away around that you won't be able to turn them on because the power button is located on the sub but why would you want to not use the sub it gives out awesome bass lol hoped this helped (;
