I have a griffin itrip now it's probably about 6 or 7 years old can they get worn out to the point for replacement

I have a ipod nano.16GB 5 TH G and a ipod classic 30 GB
5 TH G. I have been noticing that the griffin itrip is not working like it use to I was wondering if it is just old and time for a new one? There is a lot of static and I have to almost put the speakers up all the way to her anything. I never had to do that befor. You can also seewhere the wires are showing. I believe that I payed $60 + tax 5 years ago for it .
