What is the purpose of getting an Airport Extreme?

I do not own any airport device. I'm unsure about what its purpose is. I do know that I get WiFi at my house via DSL and it is fairly slow. Sometimes it randomly disconnects for about a minute. Does this device only give WiFi to apple products?

  • Your DSL (internet) provider, may have given you a Gateway (modem/router combination) that only supports 2.4 GHz. You will most likely find the router in the Gateway is set to use an Automatic channel (1-11) in the 2.4 GHz range. Most 2.4 GHz routers come from the manufacturer with the Auto channel set, you can adjust this setting and pick from channel 1, 6 or 11 to find the cleanest and most stable channel for your situation.

An Airport Extreme introduces a second wireless radio that runs at 5 GHz, this frequency is out of the range of a large number of house hold devices that share the 2.4 GHz range (cordless phones, baby monitors, yes.. microwaves). Newer Mac Book, iMac, iPad and iPhone as well as newer Windows and Android devices support the connection with the 5 GHz radio. You will find that your iMac connected in the home office does not drop its connection when a family member is making popcorn in the kitchen as long as it connects to your Airport Extreme (or any dual-banded router) using the 5 GHz radio.

It is best to check the technical specifications on you iDevice or Windows/Android device before spending the money to purchase a dual-banded router to confirm the new router will benefit you. Look for the term 'Dual-band' or 5 GHz.
