I just purchased a mail order version of OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.3) to upgrade my Mac Pro desktop from Leopard (10.5.8) to something more recent. I would have purchased Mountain Lion instead, but in researching, I read over and over again that I would have to get Snow Leopard, first, and then upgrade to Mountain Lion via the Apple (or App?) store. As it turns out, some computers such as mine - an early 2008 Mac Pro - will not run anything higher than Snow Leopard. Hope this helps if you haven't already found your answer.
