Is it better to buy a locked iPhone and unlock it yourself? (Just so it can be cheaper to buy)

  Not necessarily because locked iPhones are under a 2 year contract. If you we're to unlock it, there is a fee. Ultimately it'd be more pricey because you have the monthly plan for 2 years which is at least a thousand overtime unlike just paying $649 and above upfront.
