can iTunes cards be used to buy an iPhone 4s

If I purchase iTunes gift cards and give them as gifts to someone, can those cards be used in the Apple Store (online or physical) as well as in the iTunes Store?

    iTunes cards are used by applying them into your apple account and then you can buy books, apps, games,songs,movies,and albums. iTunes cards are not gift cards that you can buy anything physical with
