I don't believe so I've got 2 the first iPad and the third iPad and I don't have a screen cover on either. If you treat it the way it's suppose to be treated no screen cover is necessary. I do have leather cases for both that cover both the front and back. The screens are treated with an anti scratch and finger print treatment.

No, however if you use the ipad very often I suggest getting one. I suggest the Apple smart cover it gives you the protection of a cover but also acts as a stand for your iPad.
