Answer
I am a speech pathologist and a grandparent of an Autistic child. The Ipad has been really helpful for my kids at school, because they get immediate response to touching the screen.. They are totally motivated by the Ipad. I get kids to do tasks on the Ipad that I have never gotten cooperation for using normal manipulatives. When I get the Ipad out in the classroom, it is no time before I have 5 pairs of eyes looking over my shoulder. Children with autism just love videos, and the Ipad gives them videos for just about anything that they are interested in. A high functioning nonverbal chid can use the communication apps, and open a whole new world for them.
My own grandson with Autism was very late in developing speech and language. The Ipad has leveled the playing field for him. The videos have given him lots of verbal models to imitate both for his language development and also for his articulation improvement. He is in 1st grade (1st nine weeks) and is reading at a second grade level. His math skills are also ahead of where he would be expected to be at this time. He did not have benefit of preschool, but has caught up and passed many of his peers. He continues to struggle with appropriate social skills, but he has better manners and social speech than most kids. Please, thank you, etc, plus introduction are his strong suit. He is really very social, loves other kids, just doesn't understand totally what goes on on the playground etc. and is rather backward in that area.
Ok, I have bored you long enough. But depending on your child's level an Ipad can be helpful.- Answered by Denise D from Litchfield

As the father of a 11 year-old boy with autism, my answer to your question has validity. While I cannot guarantee that your child will respond the same way to the iPad, I will simply say that I cannot imagine our son not having it. It has become an indispensable tool for expression, exploration, education and relaxation.
