Can I stream movis from an external hard drive, via my MacBook, to Apple TV? Or do I have to copy them to iTunes first?
Ripped movies stored on 2tb WD external hard drive - can I plug it in to my MacBook Air, play them from the hard drive (easily possible) AND stream them from there to the Apple TV and thence to my HDTV? Or do I have to copy the appropriate movies to my iTunes library first?

Itunes will only play videos in certain formats. Unless you're able to convert all the videos you want to watch to the proper format that itunes can play on your iphone/ipod/ipad, you'll be spending a lot of time converting. I found an App called Air Video HD ($2.99) that will allow me to play all the different format videos on my IOS devices without the conversion process. The app converts while you watch, instantly. You can then stream to apple TV through your IOS device. Be sure to also download the Server too. Need the server on your computer to access the videos on your drive. The best part is that you don't need to use up space on your IOS device because the videos will remain on your drive (they are just being accessed by the server). Hope this helps

With later versions of MacOSX you can set up your Mac to mirror your screen to your AppleTV via AirPlay. My AppleTVs are packed away while my new house is under construction, but if memory serves the option is under Displays on your Mac.
