    Worth the Wait

    Written by DM from Spring

I have been using a pair of Shure 420's for 2 years now and have been pleased. With the new iTouch I needed the functionality of the in line controller. I tried the Belkin adapter but the volume controls did not always work correctly and the sound "felt dampened". I am not an audiophyle and I do have moderate high frequency hearing loss. However whatever my perception, the SE 115m+ earphones sound crisper and have more bass. They have more volume that the Apple in-ear earphones and sound far better. The in-line controller is solid and fully enclosed on the R ear piece and the buttons have a deliberate click with good tactile feedback. Voice recordings thru the mic also seem to have clearer sound than that of Apple's and pick-up less background noise. The cords have less thickness than the 420's and are one piece (no in-line break apart connectors). Very pleased with this BUY. More

Great step up from the default headset

Written by SB from New York

    Nov 8, 2009

I am no audiophile, but I do find the headset bundled with my iPhone 3G lacking in sound and quality. After going through 2 default headphones in 1.5 years of iPhone 3G ownership, I decided to try the Shure SE115m+. This is my first in-ear cans. This one has more favorable reviews than the Apple in-ear phones. Here are my impressions-

FIT/COMFORT- The sound from any in-ear phones depends on its fit inside your ear. It needs to form a tight seal for any bass reproduction. These phones come with 2 sets of in-ear plugs (different materials) in 3 sizes. I switched the default foam (med) size to the small foam size and needed to gently push the phones in for a tight seal. Quite comfortable.

SOUND- Amazing sound. Flat frequency response (which is a sign of good quality drivers inside). I listen mostly to alternative rock and every sound was crystal clear. The quality is very easily comparable to my Bose QC3 over ear noise-canceling phones (~$300). This leaves every other headphone (other than the Bose QC3) in the dust.

SOUND ISOLATION- Very good isolation, also approaching the active cancelation of the Bose QC3. The New York City subway screeching into the station was barely noticeable! To hear good sound without the 'rubbing' noise of the cord, you have to loop the wire over and behind your ear instead of hanging straight down.

DESIGN- This is where I wish it would have been a little bit better. Compared to the Apple cans, the mic and volume control are rather big. It hangs just under my jaw when the wire is looped over my ear. I wish it were smaller. Also the volume control doesn't work on the iPhone 3G which is a shame, but that is Apple's fault, not Shures. The button can be used to pause or skip just like the Apple phones. The cord material seems robust and seems like it can withstand heavy use. The overall design is quite understated which I like. The length is ideal so that my iPhone can be kept in the front or back pocket of my jeans without excess wire. The phones come with a carrying case. If they made the case a bit bigger, it could also fit my iPhone.

OVERALL- Great sound, good design. I think it is worth $120. You can only get it from the Apple store right now. The price may be lower when it reaches Amazon or something next year.

    strong contenders optimized for ipod

Written by GS from New York

A nice set of headphones, with a much heavier bass response compared to the Shure 310s and Etymotic hf2s they replaced. The volume control does NOT function with iphone 3G, but the mic button does work just like the included iPhone headset. Compared to the Shure SE310s these were much bass heavier, but gave up some of the clarity and articulation on the high end. If you're a fan of bass heavy music, these are fantastic. If you're listening to jazz or vocal, less great. They do a better job of noise isolation than the hf2, and lack the annoying cord noise. Cleaner than the rat's nest of cords when using the Shure MPA. Mic is typical Shure outstanding. Would be 5 stars but for the lack of volume control. More

    Sound quality disappointment

    Written by FS from Ashland

    Dec 15, 2009

Recently, I had the opportunity to try both the Shure SE115m+ and the KIlpsch S4i. I have owned Shure products in the past and have always enjoyed them, so I was expecting to be equally thrilled with the new product for my iPhone. To my amazement, the Klipsch won the contest hands down. The Klipsch sounds were much cleaner and crisper, and the earbuds more comfortable. For me, it was the equivalent of going to a concert and leaving the hall and running to the rest room. The Shures sounded flat and a bit muddy. But put the Klipsch in, and it was like stepping into the room where the concert is being held. My only gripe on the Klipsch is perhaps a bit too much bass. More

    eh, not that great

Written by BT from San Diego

    Dec 9, 2009

i returned the klipsche image s4i for these, recommended by one of the sales staff at the apple store (i was going to get the vmoda vibe 2 because a previous pair just fit my ear better).

the sound was only good when i shoved them into my ear until it hurt. i could tell they were falling out when the bass would get weaker and weaker. even though they were foam tips, they just wouldnt keep a strong seal. trying them on a phone call, the caller on the other end sounded like they were speaking through a tin can. i tried riding my bike w/ them and the sound was just plain horrible -- i could hear everything outside, no 'sound isolation' was present.

maybe its just my ears but these are going back to the store...

Great sounds, great feel in the ear for hours

    Written by SM from Westminster

    Dec 3, 2009

I have had Shure headphones in the past, but the controls were not present or are too bulky as an attachment. These headphones are designed to work with the iPhone 3GS and do the job well!
If the headphones are not put into the ear correctly the bass isn't as intense, but with the proper fitting they sound great and feel great in the ear. I have tried all the different ear pieces and they all can block out (most) background noise very well (even my 1 month old crying!). I have used the ear pieces for a few hours (even over 6 hours straight) and my ear never gets sore or worn out. The controls are improved over the older version attachments, but they are a little bulky still. They have a nice location between the neck and my chin.
The phone quality is marginal. I can hear the other person, but it as if they are in a tunnel. The standard Apple headphones come in better than these. The mic appears to work really well and no complaints from the callers.
I was about not to get these head phone because I read that the volume controls don't work, but they do with a 3GS.
