This RAID controller is quite nice. Its easily configurable, mounts quickly, and has a number of userful ports. I picked this up with the Mac Mini server and the truly disappointing thing about that is there are no ESATA ports on the Mac Mini, which means if you're moving very large files it takes a very long time. For example, I'm moving a 680 gig folder across my network to this RAID array and its estimating 19 hours. The Promise SmartStor isn't to blame, its the lack of faster ports on the Mac Mini. Firewire 800 doesn't cut it. More

    Please fix this!

The eco friendly aspect is a great idea, but there is no way to set the time before spin down witch makes using this drive an incredibly frustrating experience. I use it for my iTunes library and if I stop the music for a few minutes, it spins down all drives and takes forever to get back up. Make a cup of coffee or go to the bathroom and come down to a drive that is parked. Their customer support is friendly once you've spent a few hours to find them and get through, but they only confirm that yes, the drive will spin down when it wants to, and there is no way to change that.
It also frequently disappears when you reboot your computer. The way to fix this they say, is to unplug and plug back the firewire. Maybe these guys spend too much time in the idiosyncratic world of PC's, but that's not cool.

received the unit with my new iMac 27" i7 Jan 2010. Unfortunately unable to use due to the lack of a patch to make the unit work with current operating system. Promise states they are working on it but don't know when the patch will be available. Hopefully not an "empty Promise". It's been now 2 weeks and the unit is not functional as bought.
Will update review when patch becomes available (if).

This unit cannot power itself on after a power outage. The power switch is a "soft" switch, and should you lose power (and your UPS runs out of battery) this RAID system will remain powered off until you manually hit the power button. Beware if you're running 24/7 services. More

Has not worked for me (yet)

Three of four drives were dead on arrival, at least they were once I connected via firewire 800 to new Mac Mini Server. After replacement, three drives were live, and one was 'dead'. The systems (both) generated the dreaded "two beeps" on connection, which indicated malfunction. It never worked.

Promise has been excellent to work with. Very helpful (really). Sent out a replacement unit as soon as it was apparent my unit was not working.

Two weeks after purchase: I still don't have the disk space I need.

Will Apple work with me for a refund? I don't know yet. The ds4600 has (no pun intended) promise. If we can work out the difficulties I'm having with installation, I'll keep it.

I'll post back here and let you all know how it went.

By the way, I am an Apple fan. I purchased four computer systems from them, along with software, four ipods/ipad etc. This is my first "it jumped the tracks! experience.

I am using my DS4600 hanging off of my iMac to store a 1.5 TB iTunes library. I also have 3 Apple TV's on my home network and stream videos and music to them effortlessly. My only wish is that Apple supported eSATA but straming video performance is fine using the FW800.

Excellent product, very quiet and have had no stability issues whatsoever. Have been running this configuration since December of 2009. I highly recommend this drive.

Typically there is. I have a g-raid mini that has both firewire 800 and 1 esata connector. I only get 60-70 megabites a second over firewire 800, but over 120 megabites a second over esata. I assume since it is a raid 5 (4drives), (mysetup is a raid 0- 2 drives) this would be even faster! More

The SmartStor advertises standard RAID technology which while works well, does not have the advantage of DROBOs proprietary raid system. With standard RAID technology it is recommended to have matching drives (size and model). While you can technically mismatch sizes in a standard RAID they will all drop to the size of the smallest drive. For example if you have 2 500 GB drives and 2 1TB drives the RAID will see them as only 4 500 GB drives.

DROBO advertises any size or type of SATA drive and it will shuffle the space. You can also expand storage by replacing one drive at a time with no manual reconfiguration required. This means if you have 4 500 GB drives you can replace 1 of them with a 1TB drive and the unit itself will reconfigure the RAID for you. From experience, this does indeed take a while (many Hours) and you have to do them one drive at a time if you are changing multiple.

Cost is the advantage to the SmartStor
