The TomTom car kit works great for me. I like not having to connect a power adapter and audio jack before I put it into the holder. With the TomTom car kit it is easy to put in the iPhone and take out with one hand.
A lot of people on the internet have been complaining that the price is too high for a holder. In my opinion, this product is a convergence of many different products into one. A great holder, Bluetooth speaker phone, charger, car stereo audio adapter and enhanced GPS chip. I have done away with my Bluetooth speaker phone a different holder and audio adapter and the ease and convenience works well for me.
I have been using the Navigon Mobile Navigator and its accuracy has seemed to improve with the Car Kit's GPS chip. …More164 of 174 people found this useful

While I won't argue that this is a bit expensive for a holder ... it's much more than that. In addition to holding my iPhone at eye level, the GPS, built into the holder made my TomTom app coordinate in a matter of a couple seconds and stay on the correct road ... no more jumping over to parallel side streets. It's night and day the accuracy the Car Kit adds to the GPS that's built into the iPhone!! In addition, I can now do conference calls in my car without having to use my BT ear Piece. The ear Piece can get very uncomfortable and also runs out of power when I have back to back or long calls.
I did try another windshield mount in the past and the quality that the TomTom Car Kit has far surpasses the others. They felt cheap and were definitely not built to last like this one is!!

Basically the bluetooth speakerphone sounds like a great option, but in practice you are better off getting something like Griffen's car mount. It costs $30 from Apple, $20 from Fry's, and you can then use the AUX in on your car's stereo to hear phone calls through your speakers, which is vastly superior to the this cradle's tinny tiny speaker. You may be thinking "oh yuck, that would be too many wires". It's just two (one audio and one for power), just like the this dock has. It would be more attractive if it shared one cable for audio and power and split it into audio and power further down so you could more easily hide the cable from view. Basically where I stand is this: I could like this if it cost only $45-60. For that price I could live with the bluetooth speaker that isn't very audible and doesn't sound clear. For that price I could also live with the cradle only mounting to the windshield (if you want vertical mode that is, and you do). Lastly I don't like having to reach so far to adjust my iPhone. The upcoming Magellan car kit looks promising and I am hopeful it will improve on some of the shortcomings of this kit, namely more compatible bluetooth reception and no more BT stack crashes, and most important of all: the ability to keep your case on your iPhone while in the dock Griffen's car mount has the same issues with cases but it's dirt cheap. …More5 of 5 people found this useful

Not what you expected... for the price

I had every intention of being blown away by this product but that simply didn't happen. Let me preface this review by saying that if the price had been closer to $60 this would have been a four star product. I can't give it five stars simply because regardless of the price point the device fails in a few, but sufficient, number of ways.
PROS:
1. Attractive design
2. Bluetooth is convenient and replaces a headset
3. GPS works with a few other nav apps
4. Dock is flexible and can be positioned as you need it
CONS:
1. If placed on your dash, rather than your windshield, vertical isn't an option
2. Bluetooth speaker is garbled, even with windows closed (this ain't no Parrot!)
3. If you don't have super longs arms you'll be leaning in just to touch it (only extends out ~6")
4. Only some apps work (Navigon, Sygic) while others crash the bluetooth stack forcing a repairing (Magellan)
5. If connecting to AUX on your car, all audio (except voice for phone) goes through car speakers and Tomtom's app doesn't provide a way to seperately control music volume relative to gps volume (Navigon does provide this option, but it isn't linked to the volume control on the dock)
6. You can't use a case and this product simultaneously (I have an incase slider, and while it'll fit with a good hard shove, i still have to take the bottom of the case off) …More8 of 9 people found this useful

No, you don't need the TomTom app to use the dock.
There is a line out jack that will allow you to use a cable to connect to your stereo or a tape adaptor.
