The TomTom car kit works great for me. I like not having to connect a power adapter and audio jack before I put it into the holder. With the TomTom car kit it is easy to put in the iPhone and take out with one hand.
A lot of people on the internet have been complaining that the price is too high for a holder. In my opinion, this product is a convergence of many different products into one. A great holder, Bluetooth speaker phone, charger, car stereo audio adapter and enhanced GPS chip. I have done away with my Bluetooth speaker phone a different holder and audio adapter and the ease and convenience works well for me.
I have been using the Navigon Mobile Navigator and its accuracy has seemed to improve with the Car Kit's GPS chip. …More138 of 146 people found this useful

While I won't argue that this is a bit expensive for a holder ... it's much more than that. In addition to holding my iPhone at eye level, the GPS, built into the holder made my TomTom app coordinate in a matter of a couple seconds and stay on the correct road ... no more jumping over to parallel side streets. It's night and day the accuracy the Car Kit adds to the GPS that's built into the iPhone!! In addition, I can now do conference calls in my car without having to use my BT ear Piece. The ear Piece can get very uncomfortable and also runs out of power when I have back to back or long calls.
I did try another windshield mount in the past and the quality that the TomTom Car Kit has far surpasses the others. They felt cheap and were definitely not built to last like this one is!!

Overall, I really like the car kit. It does exactly what it says it does, and does it well. Once you get the initial lock (which took a while when it was fresh out of the box, or if you are in a totally different part of the country), it's very quick to get the sat signal. The speaker is good. BT pairing is simple, and I have it set up with my iPhone and BlackBerry (work phone). I don't have any issues with it staying in whatever position I turn it to as some people seem to have. I think the detents work really well.
The only thing I don't like is how you put the phone in and get it out. It's too tight. The top should move up and out of the way rather than be right there and very tight. You try to bend it up out of the way, but it's so tight/tense that you can't do much. The Dock Connector pivots forward, which helps, but not enough. Looking at the Magellan dock that just hit the FCC, that is a better design - the top holder slides up and off the iPhone. That also provides for some future-proofing since a future iPhone may be taller or shorter than the current model.
So, basically, it works really well, but is a very tight and exact fit. …MoreWas this useful?

I agree with most everyone's positive statements, but one major lacking thing is that one cannot use the USB out of the mount, to plug into USB of audio. I am using the 3.5 jack, and I get a constant audio hiss. Makes using it impossible, added to the lack of horizontal phone app support, I am about one more ride from taking it all out and returning it. I love the idea for this device. It simplifies and declutters the loose wires in the car and makes connecting and disconnecting a breeze - instead of plugging/unplugging cords every time you get in/out of your car, you simply slide the iphone into the cradle and away you go.
I have noticed some problems with Bluetooth in that sometimes it won't automatically connect. I tried inserting the iphone before starting the car, and this seems to help periodically. Also, when a call comes in, sometimes I can't hear the caller through the speaker and have to disconnect the phone and hold it up to my ear - so much for hands-free calling...Anybody else having this problem?
Another complaint is the constant "whining" coming through the stereo when playing the ipod. This is very noticeable as soon as you turn on the stereo when the aux cord is connected, and gets progressively louder when you start driving - especially when the gas pedal is pressed and the transmission is engaged. I did research and found that a Ground Loop Noise Filter can be used to eliminate this whining noise, so it's been ordered and we'll see if it works. In TomToms defense, this noise may be a result of the electrical wiring of my car, and not the unit's GPS and bluetooth radiation.
Overall, great product, excellent idea, and the price isn't so bad once you realize all that it is - holder, charger, player, bluetooth, and improved GPS. Super cool!! …More1 of 2 people found this useful

No, you don't need the TomTom app to use the dock.
There is a line out jack that will allow you to use a cable to connect to your stereo or a tape adaptor.
